What to do when you get in a car wreck

Mar 24, 2022 Personal Injury

First. Do not move your car unless it is causing an immediate danger to you or other drivers. Take many pictures of where your vehicle and the other vehicle stopped after the crash. If your vehicle is creating a dangerous condition, move your vehicle to a safe space like on the shoulder, off the main road, or in a place where there is no moving traffic (if possible). If you are unable to move your vehicle then turn on your hazards or yellow flashers to alert other drivers that your vehicle is stalled. Once you have done that, physically move to a safe space until help arrives.

Call 911. It is important to get a crash report to document the crash and obtain information like insurance and witness statements. The investigating officer will also attempt to determine which driver(s) caused the crash. The officer can also call for additional emergency vehicles, ambulances, and tow trucks if needed. When you call 911 the dispatch officer will also ask if you need immediate medical assistance while the officer is in route.

Stay calm. Often drivers are (understandably) angry and frustrated after a crash. The other driver may even try to blame you for the crash or simply be confrontational, if so it is best to stay calm and limit conversations with other. Do not admit fault. Do not engage with the other driver when things get heated. Call a friend or relative to assist you at the scene if possible. If things get very heated, try to go to a public space like a store. Or simpley stay in your vehicle and lock the door while waiting for law enforcement.

Obtain insurance and identifying information from the other parties involved and witnesses. The easiest way to do this is to take a photo with your phone of the front and back of the other driver’s license and insurance card.

Take many photos and videos. You should document any damage to your vehicle and the other driver’s vehicle. Take photos of all skid marks, tire tracks in the road, and crash debris. Take photos of any obstructions or traffic light sequence if necessary. Take photos of any construction items in the road near the crash scene. Try to locate any video surveillance and ask if you can record it on your phone.

Seek medical attention. It is important to visit the Hospital or an urgent care as soon as possible after a car wreck. Even if you do not feel like you are injured at first it is better to make sure by being checked out by a medical professional. Then you must seek additional treatment from an injury clinic or your primary care doctor within three days after the crash.

I have known Holland for over 13 years now. Best Attorney in Houston. Very knowledgeable of the law, straight forward and leaves mediators and other attorneys speechless with his arguments. He has successfully defended my business from wrongful lawsuits, won the cases and has given me countless personal and professional advice over the years. I would highly recommend Dekeyzer law firm.
